This award was inaugurated in 2012 for young Māori working in the agricultural sector. The competition has proved to be very popular and has attracted high quality entrants. A new award for Horticulture was also introduced in 2020.
The competition is run in conjunction with the senior Ahuwhenua Trophy. The current 2026 award is for Horticulture. The upcoming 2027 award is open to Māori dairy farmers.
